Tim thinks he found something new...

Too bad Tim Kalamaros doesn't read Wordcraft...or this Blog or WWFTD or Language Log or AWAD or Uncle Jazzbeau’s Gallimaufrey.  He must not be a logophile or a linguaphile.  Were he, he'd then realize that he has posted some really old news today.  He says, "Well I have found a synonym thanks to the internet, which has revived a very old English word for it."  Oh, Tim.  This is very old news.  We've talked about it on Wordcraft since December 14, 2002, and a search shows we've mentioned the word 309 times.  Further, we've brought in experts on the word, including Ammon Shea, co-author of "Depraved and Insulting English."  He's the one who introduced us to it being in Bailey's "Universal Etymological English Dictionary."  While Kalamaros did link to Bailey's, he surely doesn't introduce us to anything new.

Do you think it was coincidence that he posted it on 9/11?

Wow. I didn't think about that. Maybe. Maybe not.

I don't know the guy at all, but as a lawyer, I was surprised that he hadn't done a bit more leg work. I don't think I'd want to hire him as my lawyer.

Think about it this way, you're winning the good fight! A few hundred more google hits and it could really start to pick up steam. You can throw a big party when it finally makes it into the OED.

Also, have you started to work on the OEDILF entry for epicaricacy? That could be a fun regular feature on this blog.

Good point, Sean. Perhaps I will. I do have problems coming up with subjects here. Everytime I think of something to Blog about, I decide to post it on wordcraft instead! I was planning to post the "mindful" practice post here, but put it instead on Wordcraft. It's hard to have two word Web sites.
