What is art?

Bob Hale has an excellent Blog , which I've mentioned before. In today's discussion, he talks about "what is art." We've talked about this on Wordcraft, too. It really is hard to define. Bob thinks if the alleged artist calls it art, then it is. Richard English from Wordcraft thinks that's balderdash and that it must be beautiful to look at, as well as worth something. I suppose I lie somewhere in between. However, I just can't think this is art, do you?

As I've said quite often, I understand exactly why you don't think this is art but I still maintain that this is muddling up "i don't think this is art" with "I don't think this is good art".

I've had some conversations with Pete (the owner and author of sneezecount) who says that, a bit like the OEDILF, it started as an in-joke between him and some friends and then, as he realised that it was a good comment on various aspects of blogging he went ahead with it. And yes, he also likes counting stuff.

Well, just because you decide to do something a little odd, doesn't mean that it's art. I started this Blog simply to see if I could, and that's surely odd. However, I'd not call it "art." But, by your definition, that would mean it's not art. Yet, if Cat calls her Blog "art," then hers is. Hers probably is closer to art than mine, though, because of the knitting aspect. I definitely consider knitting an art. Some of the designs are amazing.

By the way, Bob, if Monet hadn't considered his paintings art, would you say it's not art then?

I think my knitting is art . . . and craft. I've talked briefly about this on my blog, at your request. :-) Thanks for asking!

Sure it's art. It's funny, too.
